Dean played with The Todes.

Dean C. Guinn died suddenly Saturday, January 12, 2002 while doing what he loved best: spending time on the ski slopes with his family and friends.

Dean was born Dec. 1, 1944 to Charles Harrison Guinn and Dorothy Ann Tanner in Dragerton, Utah.

His family moved to Denver, CO. where he was raised. He left Colorado to attend BYU. He interrupted his education to serve an LDS mission to central Germany, before graduating with a degree in German and English. After touring with the USO in the Orient, he served two years in military intelligence with the U.S. Army in Munich, Germany.

Upon his return, he completed his education and married Margaret Ann (Meg) Hayes in the Salt Lake Temple. In Provo, he became part owner of the Provo Village Sports Den and later the Post Horn clothing store; he also helped establish the Sundance Ski Team. In 1986, Dean became a member of the faculty of the Waterford School, where he taught German and served in a variety of administrative and coaching positions.

In 1988, he moved from Waterford's Provo campus to its Sandy campus. Notable among the many contributions he made to the school was the ski program he founded and on which he lavished his time, energy, enthusiasm, and expertise. This year Waterford awarded him the Educator Prize, its highest honor.

Dean's life was spent in service. He enriched the lives of hundreds of young people who grew to love German, travel, skiing, soccer, the banjo, bratwurst, and 60's rock and roll. He will be remembered for his generosity, for his contagious laugh and happy-go-lucky spirit, for leading summer trips to Europe, for coordinating ski race camps at Mt. Hood, and for the joy with which he lived his life.

Dean is survived by his wife, Meg, and their six children: Sarah, Peter, Hanni, Jenny, Ali, and Patrick, of Sandy; and by his mother, Dorothy; and brothers, James and David Guinn, of Denver, CO. His father, Charles; and sister, Charlotte, preceded him in death.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002 at 12 noon in the Crescent West Stake Center, 1250 East 11000 South. Friends may call Friday evening 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Larkin Sunset Gardens Mortuary, 1950 East 10600 South, and Saturday at the Stake Center 10:30-11:45 a.m. Interment will be in the Pleasant Grove City Cemetery .

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Dean C. Guinn Fund, a trust fund for his children's education, at the Waterford School, Sandy, Utah.
